Artist's Statement

"I paint whatever catches my eye, usually because of a combination of colour, shape and light which I long to give a sense of place to in the painting."

Mary Barnes is a self-taught British oil painter specialising in landscapes.

The predominately rural county of Somerset is the inspiration behind many of her  landscape paintings, providing her with the challenge of capturing a sense of place and atmosphere.

Painting mostly from life using a plein air easel (pochade), her landscape work includes painting gardens, local allotments and occasionally urban settings. She also paints interiors, still life, dog portraits and welcomes commissions.
